Step 1: Check if you have to apply for a visa to enter Vietnam
Before you jump into a Vietnam visa application, it is important to check if you are required a visa to enter Vietnam or not. In the following cases, you will have a visa exemption:
- Your country on the Vietnam visa exemption list
- You arrive in Vietnam by layover flight, which is less than 24 hours and you are not leaving the airport
- You only visit Phu Quoc, Vietnam without any other areas of the country
Besides these cases, you will most likely need to do a Vietnam visa application to enter the country. For more details about Vietnam visa, you should check our article Vietnam Visa Guide 2024: Must read for your Vietnam trip before going to the next step.
Step 2: Check what types of Vietnam visa you need before Vietnam visa application
There are a few types of visas to Vietnam, however, there are 2 main ones that you will have to choose
- Single entry visa
- Multiple entry visa
Step 3: Prepare your documents
There are some required documents that you will have to provide during the process of a Vietnam visa application on the official website:
- Your passport data page photo
- Your portrait photo
- Your travel information
Your passport data page photo
For your passport, you don’t need to take photos of all pages. Just do a good shot of the data page (like the example below). The photo should be straight from above, not inclined. Remember to check all of the details on your passport photo. They must not be blurry or unreadable.
Your passport must be still valid at the arrival date for the Vietnam visa application. There is no specific valid period mentioned, however, it is recommended that your passport is at least 6 months valid.
You should save the passport photo as JPG file.
Your portrait photo
Stay focused on your portrait photo used for the Vietnam visa application. Most of the visa denials have resulted from the wrong portrait photo. Here are some tips you should follow:
- Your face must be straight looking at the camera
- You don’t wear glasses (thin glasses are ok but it is best to remove them all), masks, or anything that covers a part of your face
- Don’t let your hair cover your face, or even your ears
- Your photo must not be too blurry
- Your photo must not be too old or look so much different from the photo in your passport
- Yoủ must not express any emotions that may change your face shape (don’t open your mouth, close your eyes,…)
- Your photo must not be from a selfie
- It is recommended that your photo has a contrast, single-colored background
- It is recommended to save the photo as JPG file
Here is an example for a good portrait photo that reduce your risk of being denied for Vietnam visa application.
Your travel information
For your travel information, you will just need to follow the form on the Vietnam visa application website. Those will be guided in detail when we come to the next steps. However, please note that for this part, you need to put exact details without any mistyping.
Step 4: Visit the offical websites for Vietnam visa application
You must be confused by the results of Google search: there are too many websites claiming themselves to be official for Vietnam visa application out there. However, they are all agents. At the moment there are only 2 official websites managed by Vietnam government:
- https://evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn/ – the first website
- https://dichvucong.bocongan.gov.vn/bocongan/bothutuc/tthc?matt=26277 – the new website
Whatever the site you visit, they will lead you to the same form. But we recommend you use the new one, just in case the old one is not used anymore in the future. After you visit the website, here are the next steps for each:
evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn
If you choose this site, it will lead you to the page like photo 1 below. In case all that you can see is Vietnamese language, you can change the settings at the top right corner. After that:

Inpur your images
Remember what you prepared in Step 3 – Prepare your documents? Now is the time you put them in the form, which will require your portrait photo and passport data page photo. Don’t forget to check if they all meet the quality.
Personal information
For this section, your input information must be the same as your passport. Don’t mistype anything, and remember to double-check before going to the next section.
Passport & visa input
This section is the same as above, you need to input exactly what your passport information is. Then choose single entry or multiple entry depending on what you need for your trip.
For visa validity, the Vietnam visa application form only allows you to choose a maximum of 90 days (3 months). If you choose more than that, there will be an error message. You can choose the starting valid date before your arrival (but should not after). For the exit date, just choose the maximum time of 90 days, because it does not cost you anything.
Contact & occupation info
This section is not required, so you can choose to ignore it. However, we still recommend you fill out all of them. They will slightly help you get your Vietnam visa easier, and even help you in some other cases when traveling in Vietnam.
Vietnam trip information
This section is quite important, as sometimes travelers get their Vietnam visa denied because of this. Here are some tips for filling these:
- Purpose of entry: you are travelers, so just use Tourism
- If you are not traveling using an agency, ignore the agency part
- Choose 90 days staying in Vietnam, it won’t cost you anything more compared to choosing 30 days
- Choose the entry/ exit date the same as passport & visa input section
- For the exit checkpoint, it is not necessary to be exactly like your plan, but for the entry checkpoint, it should be
Children under 14 and other info
If you have kids under 14 years old traveling with you, then simply put information about each into this section (click the plus button). Note that the children still have to get a separate Vietnam visa. If you don’t have any children with you, just ignore this.
For trip expenses and insurance, you can pass this section. However, inputting these may slightly increase your chance of getting your visa granted.
If you have done all of the steps above, input the captcha code, tick on “I assure that I have truthfully declared all relevant details” and click “Review Application Form” for the next step.
Step 6: Receive your registration code
After submitting your Vietnam visa application form, you will receive a pop-up window in which there will be your information. At the top line, you will receive your Registration code.
Do take a screenshot, or copy your code and save it for checking later. The pop-up window will look like the example photo below:
Step 7: Review all the information
After clicking OK in the pop-up window, you will be led to the Information Review Page. Here you just need to double-check your information:
- If they are not right, just roll to the end of the page and click “Back” to return editing.
- If they are all right, click “Payment” to the next step
Step 8: Payment
Into the payment step, you will see a preview payment information, which will convert your total payment amount into Vietnam Dong (VND). Just tick “Agree” and click “Pay e-visa fee”.
In the next window, select Pay by Visa/ Mastercard/ JCB/ AMEX, because the first option is only for those who have Vietnamese bank’s card. Then just input your card information and make the payment.
Step 9: Wait for your Vietnam visa & check
After the payment, you have finished your Vietnam visa application and just need to wait for 3-7 working days (may take longer in Vietnam national holidays).
You may not receive an email if your Vietnam visa is granted or denied, so it is best to check every day after 3 working days. To check the status of your Vietnam visa application, visit the link below and input your code with other information:
Step 10: Use your visa to enter Vietnam
If your Vietnam visa is granted, congratulations! However, don’t forget to check your information on the visa again, in case there is any mistake. If everything is fine, then you can save the file to your phone, and print a hard copy to show when entering Vietnam.
