You’re three beers deep on Ta Hien Street and your friend says, “Let’s get matching tattoos.”
Not the worst idea. Hanoi has quietly built a reputation for clean, English-speaking tattoo shops that rival anything in Bangkok or Saigon — at half the price you’d pay in London or Sydney. But you don’t want to end up in some back-alley scratcher with a blurry design you’ll regret by morning.
After the HCMC tattoo post we published, readers kept asking: “What about Hanoi?” So here you go. 8 English-speaking studios in the Old Quarter and beyond, with real reviews, real addresses, and no bullshit.

1. Silver Ant Tattoo
Where: 3rd Floor, 47 Hang Buom, Hoan Kiem
Instagram: @silveranttattoo | WhatsApp: +84 916 775 535
Price: 1,500,000 – 15,000,000+ VND
A guy from Melbourne walked in last month with a photo of his grandmother and said, “I want her on my arm, but make it Vietnamese.” Two sessions later, he had a portrait of his grandmother with lotus petals and Dong Son drum patterns woven into the background. He cried. The artist cried. Everyone in the shop cried.
That’s Silver Ant. 5 artists, 4+ years experience each, zero infections since they opened. They’ve been featured on Vietcetera, Vietnam Done Right, and half a dozen travel blogs for a reason. They don’t copy Pinterest designs — they make custom pieces you’ll actually want to show people.
- Styles: Minimalism to full sleeves, realism, Vietnamese motifs, watercolor
- Hygiene: Single-use needles, sealed packs opened in front of you
- Best if: You want a custom, one-of-a-kind tattoo from an established shop
2. Azone Tattoo
Where: 102 Le Thanh Tong & 57 Luong Ngoc Quyen, Hoan Kiem
Instagram: @azonetattoo | Phone: 0981318686
Price: 1,000,000 – 12,000,000+ VND
An Australian traveler named Sophie told us her experience at Azone: “I wanted a lotus but had no idea what style. Karim sat with me for 20 minutes, showed me 15 reference photos, and asked what the lotus meant to me. The result was nothing like what I imagined — it was better.”
Artists Ann, Karim, and Nunu all speak fluent English. Azone specializes in Vietnamese cultural tattoos — dragons, Dong Son patterns, calligraphy — but they also do fine line, script, and realism. Two locations in the Old Quarter, and they’ll give you aftercare instructions in English you can actually follow.
- Styles: Vietnamese motifs, fine line, realism, script, cover-ups
- English: Full English consultation from design to aftercare
- Best if: You want a Vietnam-inspired tattoo with clear communication
3. 1984 Studio
Where: 37 Ma May, Hoan Kiem
Instagram: @1984.studios | Website: 1984studio.vn
Price: 1,500,000 – 12,000,000+ VND
1984 Studio’s name comes from their mission: helping people keep their faith through challenges. A traveler named Dave came in for a memorial piece for his dad. Artist Chew spent the first 15 minutes just listening — no sketching, no upselling, just listening.
They’ve been around since 2015 with 9 artists covering every style you can name. Free consultation, and the whole team handles English comfortably. The vibe is calm and intentional, which matters when someone’s permanently marking your body.
4. 3 INK
Where: 29 Hang Giay, Hoan Kiem
Instagram: @3.ink
Price: 800,000 – 8,000,000+ VND
3 INK is the kind of place you stumble into after a few beers and walk out with a surprisingly good decision. A British backpacker told us: “I was just walking past, saw their Instagram feed in the window, and 45 minutes later I had a minimalist compass on my wrist. 800,000 VND. Would’ve cost me 200 quid in London.”
They get a lot of walk-ins and the staff speak good English. Not pretentious. Not expensive. Just solid work for a fair price.
5. La Thanh Tattoo
Where: 5 Ta Hien, Hoan Kiem
Facebook: @Lathanhtattoo
Price: 1,500,000 – 10,000,000+ VND
Right on the busiest backpacker strip in Hanoi. You’ve probably walked past it without noticing — which is ironic, because their artists have trophies from the Vietnam Tattoo Convention and Vietnam Tattoo EXPO.
They work with all skin types, including sensitive skin. If you’ve had reactions to ink before, mention it when you book. These guys know their pigments.
6. The Hangout Tattoo Studio & Cafe
Where: Hoan Kiem District (DM @thehangout.tattoo.hanoi)
Instagram: @thehangout.tattoo.hanoi
Price: 1,000,000 – 10,000,000+ VND
A coffee shop that also does tattoos. Only in Hanoi. Artist Luan Nguyen (@boredtodeathtattoo, 15K followers) built this place so you could have a real conversation before committing to permanent ink — not a rushed 5-minute chat over a flash sheet.
His specialty is blackwork and bold lines. Grab a ca phe sua da, show him your reference photos, and let him do his thing. The reviews mention the word “clean” so many times it’s almost suspicious.
7. Mad Ink
Where: Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem (DM via Facebook)
Facebook: Mad Ink Hanoi
Price: 1,000,000 – 10,000,000+ VND
Mad Ink gets shouted out in expat Facebook groups more than any other shop in Hanoi. The reviews all say the same thing: “Safe, friendly, professional, English-speaking.”
They do tattoos and piercings. Walk-ins welcome. If you’re new to tattoos and just want somewhere that won’t feel sketchy, this is a solid first stop.
8. H2M Tattoo Studio
Where: Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem
TripAdvisor: Highly rated
Price: 1,000,000 – 8,000,000+ VND
Smaller and less Instagram-famous than Silver Ant, but the quality is there. Their tagline is “where art meets memories” — a bit poetic, but their TripAdvisor reviews back it up.
H2M is the backup you want when Silver Ant is booked solid (which happens often). Same area, similar prices, custom designs, English-speaking.

Before You Go
- Check Instagram first. Every shop posts recent work. Actually look at it before you commit.
- Bring reference photos. Words help, but a picture saves everyone 20 minutes of guessing.
- Get a price before they start. Hanoi shops quote per piece. Know the number.
- Watch the needle pack being opened. If they don’t do this, you’re in the wrong shop.
- Book Silver Ant ahead. They’re popular for a reason. Walk-ins work but appointments get you the artist you actually want.
Hanoi’s climate is different from Saigon — dry and cool in winter, sticky and hot in summer. Your artist will adjust aftercare instructions for the season. Follow them.

Bottom Line
Go to Silver Ant if you want the sure thing. Go to Azone if you want something Vietnam-themed. Walk into 3 INK if you’re spontaneous. And if you’re nervous about the whole thing, Mad Ink will put you at ease.
Hanoi won’t shout “tattoo me” the way Bangkok does. That’s the point. The scene is smaller, the artists are hungrier, and the quality-to-price ratio is absurd.
Got a Hanoi shop we should add? Drop it in the comments.
