Money Exchange in Ho Chi Minh City: Choose by Area

In central Ho Chi Minh City, choose an exchange stop around your actual location rather than travelling to a shop because it is called the “best” online. For the Ben Thanh and Bui Thi Xuan area, the bank offices below provide current, identifiable destinations. Around Dong Khoi and Nguyen Hue, Vietcombank also lists appointed hotel exchange agents. Compare the final cash quote, not an old rate in a review.

Ben Thanh and Bui Thi Xuan: staffed bank offices

Vietcombank’s Sai Gon branch is at 69 Bui Thi Xuan. Sacombank’s Ben Thanh transaction office is on Nguyen Thi Nghia. Both are listed as banking offices, not merely cash machines:

Use the listed morning and afternoon sessions when planning your visit. An office’s existence does not mean it accepts every foreign currency, damaged note or amount without conditions. Tell the bank which currency and denominations you have and ask whether it can buy those notes for VND. Take your passport for identification and ask for the receipt and full calculation.

“All currencies” and “unlimited cash” are not useful promises for a traveller. A bank can quote both cash and transfer rates while having different availability at different offices. If your currency is not commonly handled, confirmation before the journey matters more than the number of bank names in a list.

Le Thanh Ton, Dong Khoi and Nguyen Hue

Check the exact Vietcombank branch name carefully. The current directory lists its Le Thanh Ton transaction office at the Gemadept building, number 2 Le Thanh Ton—not the older 231 Le Thanh Ton address repeated in some guides.

For a hotel-based exchange enquiry along the central shopping streets, Vietcombank’s separate appointed-agent directory lists:

• Rex Hotel at 141 Nguyen Hue.
• Majestic Hotel at 1 Dong Khoi.
• Grand Hotel at 8 Dong Khoi.
• Continental Hotel at 132–134 Dong Khoi.

These are bank-listed exchange-agent locations, not recommendations based on an assumed room standard. Ask the hotel about the exchange desk’s hours, currencies, identification and non-guest access. A hotel being open overnight does not establish a 24-hour exchange counter, and an appointed agency listing does not promise the highest rate.

Arriving at Tan Son Nhat

Vietnam’s official tourism payment guidance describes currency exchange and international-card ATMs at major international airports. After landing, follow the banking or exchange signs for your actual terminal. Do not use a departure-gate location as if it were a public arrivals counter.

For the first exchange, calculate what you need before you can reach a city bank: transport you have not prepaid and immediate food or other purchases. If a counter is closed or cannot accept your notes, a compatible ATM or a card-paid/prearranged transfer can be a separate fallback. Neither guarantees zero fees; agree on the payment method before starting the journey.

This guide does not publish a current counter-by-counter Tan Son Nhat inventory or operating schedule. It also does not assume all terminals have identical services. The decision is whether an available airport quote meets your immediate need—not whether airports must always be more expensive than the city.

What about gold shops near Ben Thanh?

A jewellery business and an authorised foreign-currency exchange agent are not the same thing. Before exchanging at a gold shop, check the exchange authorisation, the appointing bank and the written transaction terms. A map rating, a queue or a recommendation from another traveller is not proof of permission.

We do not attach an unverified “no documents”, “any amount” or guaranteed better-rate promise to Ha Tam, Kim Mai, Hung Long or other frequently mentioned shops. If you choose one, verify the specific cash service rather than treating the shop’s name as a legal or safety guarantee. Where that cannot be established, use a bank or a bank-listed agent instead.

A better quote has to survive the full calculation

Ask: “How many dong will I receive for these notes, after all fees?” Keep your original cash in sight until the rate and total are agreed. Count the VND before leaving and query any damaged or suspicious notes immediately.
