Sudden hail in Ha Giang 27/03 - 29/03
Between March 27 and 29, hail along with tornadoes hit several areas in Ha Giang (also called Ha Giang Loop), disrupting the lives of the inhabitants and causing damage to crops, possessions, and welfare facilities, with Yen Minh district experiencing the most severe effects.
Preliminary data from Ha Giang’s Disaster Prevention, Search, and Rescue Command on the evening of March 28 shows that 1,291 homes across communes in Yen Minh and some in Meo Vac had their roofs damaged. The storm also caused roof damage to a middle school in Xin Cai (Ve Vac) and over 20 houses across Lung Cu, Pho Cao (Dong Van), and Xin Cai, Khau Vai (Meo Vac).
The impact on agriculture and forestry was considerable, with 273.6 hectares of corn and crops damaged, including 243.6 hectares in Yen Minh alone; hail also damaged the roofs of 69 animal enclosures.
The help from police after the disaster
Immediately following the disaster, the Ha Giang Provincial Police mobilized forces to assist residents in the district in quickly mitigating the damages caused by natural disasters.
The Ha Giang Provincial Police deployed over 100 officers and soldiers, along with local forces, to help residents move materials, repair roofs, and fix damaged animal pens in six affected communes: Bach Dich, Phu Lung, Thang Mo, Sung Chang, Sung Thai, Huu Vinh, and Mau Long.
Embodying a proactive spirit and dedication to serving the people, especially in their time of need, each officer and soldier bravely faced difficulties to provide support to every affected household, prioritizing families in particularly challenging circumstances, such as those with only the elderly and children at home, due to working adults being away. This effort helped the residents overcome the initial hardships.
In the future, the Ha Giang Provincial Police will continue to collaborate with other forces and local government and party committees to jointly assist the people in overcoming difficulties, providing temporary housing support to stabilize their lives. This initiative aims to further enhance the image of the police force in the hearts of the people.
Weather expert explained
Explaining the causes behind the recent extreme weather events, Mr. Vu Anh Tuan, Deputy Head of the Weather Forecasting Department at the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, stated that there have been occurrences of weak cold air masses recently. Meanwhile, a low-pressure area in the West has been developing and expanding, and the wind zone above 5,000 meters has been moving from West to East. These factors combined have caused significant disturbances in the northern provinces, especially in the mountainous regions.
“As a result, there have been quite a lot of thunderstorms in recent days, with hail occurring in some northern mountainous provinces yesterday and today.
Currently, as we transition from the cold to the warm season, the atmosphere’s instability is very high. In April, May, and even June, thunderstorms may occur frequently nationwide, not just in the North. The public should also be wary of accompanying hail,” Mr. Anh Tuan added.
Residents should be particularly vigilant when noticing strong winds, sudden drops in temperature, and the presence of dark, swirling clouds, as these conditions highly indicate the possibility of hail.
Therefore, any travelers who plan to do a Ha Giang Loop Tour should be careful of the incoming hails.
