Hamburg Red Light District: Reeperbahn and St. Pauli, Explained

Reeperbahn is one nightlife street in St. Pauli, not the whole neighbourhood. See public sights to plan around and use HVV for your current route.

Hamburg’s Reeperbahn is a famous nightlife street, but it is not the whole St. Pauli neighbourhood. The city’s visitor guide describes theatres, galleries, bars, nightclubs and live-music venues along the street; it also lists the Panoptikum, Große Freiheit and Hans-Albers-Platz as public sights. It is a mixed public entertainment area, not a single-purpose attraction.

Reeperbahn is a street; St. Pauli is the wider area

Hamburg Tourism describes the Reeperbahn as a 930-metre nightlife and entertainment street in St. Pauli. The names are not interchangeable: the Reeperbahn is the street, while St. Pauli is the wider area around it.

Public sights beyond the nightlife label

The city’s St. Pauli guide also lists public sights including Beatlesplatz, Landungsbrücken and the Old Elbe Tunnel. These give you options for music history or a harbour visit alongside evening entertainment; plan by the specific attraction or venue, not by the broad label alone.

Plan by the stop you want

Start with the show, museum, restaurant or harbour pier you want to visit. Then use the official HVV connection planner to check the route for your specific trip. A planned public stop is more useful than relying on “St. Pauli” or “red light district” as if either were one precise address.

Keep photographs focused on public architecture and signs, not close-ups of people or private entrances. The images here show public Hamburg streets and harbour context; none identifies a person or business as sex work.
