Sa Ky to Ly Son: Which Ferry Route Are You Booking?
Sa Ky–Ly Son and Big Island–Small Island are different boat legs. Check the ports on your ticket before arranging transfers or a same-day connection.
The first question is not which boat is fastest; it is which crossing your ticket covers. Sa Kỳ–Lý Sơn is the mainland-to-island leg. The trip from Đảo Lớn (Big Island) to Đảo Bé (Small Island) is a separate route. Confirm the departure and arrival ports printed on each ticket before arranging a car or building a tight connection.
That distinction matters because “Ly Son ferry” can describe more than one boat ride. Quảng Ngãi’s Decision 28/2026/QĐ-UBND lists the Sa Kỳ–Lý Sơn and Đảo Lớn–Đảo Bé routes separately in its waterway-management rules. The decision is not a passenger timetable, but it confirms that the two legs are not interchangeable. Read the provincial decision (Vietnamese PDF).
Choose the crossing before you plan the transfer
For the mainland crossing, start with Sa Kỳ Port and the exact service/date shown by the ticket seller or operator. The Vietnam National Authority of Tourism describes a speedboat from Sa Kỳ and also mentions a boat connection from Đà Nẵng. Those are different journey options, not proof that every listing uses the same boat, pier or schedule. Its Ly Son overview is useful for orientation; confirm the actual departure and arrival ports on your booking.
If your plan includes Đảo Bé, treat it as a second leg from Lý Sơn rather than assuming the Sa Kỳ ticket continues there. Official Vietnam tourism information identifies Big Island and Small Island as separate parts of the destination, while the provincial regulation names the island-to-island route separately. Check whether a separate ticket or local boat is needed for your travel date before you reserve a same-day activity.
The current route page from Phú Quốc Express is one operator’s booking information for Sa Kỳ–Lý Sơn. Use the operator or your ticket issuer for live departure times, fares, availability and change rules; a destination guide cannot confirm inventory for a particular sailing.

Leave room for the land journey on both sides
A ferry ticket covers its stated boat leg; it does not by itself arrange your journey to Sa Kỳ or your onward trip after arrival. If you are combining the crossing with a flight, train or long-distance drive, check the complete itinerary rather than planning only around the ferry duration. Keep a workable buffer for the road transfer, check-in instructions and any schedule changes. There is no universal buffer that makes every connection safe, so avoid a tight same-day connection when missing it would disrupt the rest of your trip.
For the return, check the departure port and sailing date again instead of assuming it mirrors your outward ticket. The operator’s route information can change, and weather or operational notices may affect a sailing. Reconfirm through the ticket issuer shortly before travel and keep its contact details available offline.

Before paying, verify these details on the ticket
- The route and direction: mainland to Lý Sơn, island to island, or the return leg.
- The exact departure and arrival port names; do not rely on a map pin labelled only “Ly Son ferry.”
- Travel date, departure time, passenger names and any document requirements stated by the operator.
- Where to check in, when to arrive, and what happens if the sailing is delayed, changed or cancelled.
- Whether your onward car, rail or flight plan still works if the boat timing changes.
Do not transfer a mainland-to-island booking to the Đảo Lớn–Đảo Bé route, or vice versa, without confirmation from the seller. If you are also taking a Phú Quốc ferry on the same Vietnam trip, our Ha Tien to Phu Quoc ferry-port guide covers a different route and explains why checking the exact pier and service type matters there too.
