Bac Lieu Bird Sanctuary: Birdwatching and Planning a Visit
Bac Lieu Bird Sanctuary is about 4 km from the former city centre. Plan birdwatching around confirmed access and the reserve’s limited visitor facilities.
Bac Lieu Bird Sanctuary is a mangrove reserve about 4 km from the former Bac Lieu city centre, in Hiep Thanh Ward, Ca Mau. Consider it a short nature stop if you are already in the area, rather than the sole reason for a long detour: the reserve’s birdlife is well documented, but its visitor facilities need more caution.
Reports published in March 2026 described deteriorated viewing and exhibition facilities and limited visitor services, alongside plans for new investment. A current opening schedule and confirmation that those improvements are finished are not available in the sources reviewed for this guide. Arrange access before committing transport specifically to the sanctuary.
Finding the sanctuary
Search for the Vietnamese name Vườn chim Bạc Liêu, with phường Hiệp Thành, tỉnh Cà Mau. Older guides may still use the former Bac Lieu Province or Nha Mat locality. The 2025 provincial reorganisation combined the former Bac Lieu and Ca Mau provinces under Ca Mau, as explained in the province’s administrative history.
Use this Google Maps search for the sanctuary to locate the reserve, then ask your driver to confirm the current visitor entrance. This is a place-name search, not a verified entrance pin. The roughly 4 km figure in the March reporting is measured from the former city centre; it is not the distance from Ca Mau city.
What you are going to see
The main interest is the bird habitat rather than a developed recreation park. A July 2026 report, quoting the forest management board, describes a 125-hectare reserve with 105 recorded bird species and an estimated 20,000–30,000 birds. It identifies the site as a remnant of the region’s mangrove ecosystem.

For birdwatching, movement matters as much as the number of birds recorded at the reserve. Vietnam News’s earlier reporting described birds leaving to feed in the morning and returning towards sunset, with nesting activity in August and September. Those observations can help you choose what to ask about locally, but they are not opening hours. Do not arrange a dawn arrival without confirming that visitors can enter then.
Bring binoculars or a camera with a longer lens if birds are your main interest; that lets you observe from the areas open to visitors instead of approaching nests. Keep quiet around the habitat, do not feed wildlife and stay out of closed or damaged structures.

Entry, facilities and a useful way to confirm access
VnExpress reported on 21 March 2026 that visitors could enter without an admission charge at that time, generally stayed briefly and had limited services. That dated free-entry report is not a current tariff. The same account described an investment project being developed in stages for 2026–2028.
Before leaving, ask your accommodation or local driver to contact the Bac Lieu Special-Use and Protection Forest Management Board, the reserve’s managing body named in the reporting. Give them the exact reserve name and your intended date. These are the questions that determine whether the stop works:
- Is the sanctuary admitting visitors on that date, and at what hours?
- Which entrance, viewing areas and paths are open?
- Is there an entry charge, and are toilets currently usable?
You can show this message in Vietnamese: “Tôi muốn tham quan Vườn chim Bạc Liêu vào ngày … Vườn có đón khách không, mở cửa giờ nào và vào cổng nào? Giá vé hiện tại bao nhiêu? Khu quan sát và nhà vệ sinh có sử dụng được không?”
Until you have that answer, plan food and other essentials outside the reserve rather than assuming the older visitor complex is operating. If access cannot be confirmed, keep the sanctuary out of a fixed paid itinerary and use the time for other stops in Bac Lieu.
Fit it into a Bac Lieu visit
The March reporting places the sanctuary near Nha Mat Tourist Area and Quan Am Phat Dai. These give you a starting point for discussing a local route rather than driving across the Mekong Delta for one uncertain stop. For a meal in the same area, our Bac Lieu food guide explains dishes such as bún bò cay and bánh tằm bì and how to choose between their flavours.
Treat the sanctuary as a conservation visit with variable visitor arrangements. A confirmed entrance and a realistic expectation of facilities matter more than an ambitious list of activities.
