Fake Grab taxi
In Vietnam, beware of fake Grab drivers who may approach you, especially in busy tourist areas. These impostors often use fake logos or claim to be your booked driver but can charge higher rates or take you on longer routes.
Overprice trick
In 2024, a Grab taxi driver in Vietnam scammed a Japanese tourist by overcharging them, turning a trip that should have cost around 500,000 VND (about 20 USD) into a hefty 2.9 million VND (over 120 USD). Authorities quickly identified and fined the driver for fraudulent behavior, aiming to protect visitors and uphold the country’s tourism reputation.
This is just one of many cases in that tourists meet when using Grab taxi app in Vietnam, even when the price is already shown in the app.
Disrespecting customers
Because drivers are not official workers for the company, customers usually have negative feedback about their behaviors. Customers report repeated failed booking attempts or abrupt trip cancellations without clear reasons, causing inconvenience. Drivers often avoid short trips or rides in poor weather, leading to long waits.
The problem became so bad that Bao Giao Thong (Traffic Newspaper – a famous one in Vietnam) had an article about them.
However, you should keep in mind that not all Grab drivers are bad. There are many nice people out there who can provide you with a great trip.
However, for tourists, especially first-timers, it is best to secure your trip with a less risky type of transportation. To learn more, read this article:
