Hanoi to Ninh Binh: Choose the Transport and Drop-off That Fit Your Trip

The train, limousine bus and private car all work. The better choice depends on your final stop: Ninh Binh city, Tam Coc, Trang An or farther out.

The route is about 90 km south of Hanoi and often takes around two hours. The decision that causes the most trouble comes after the vehicle choice: where will you get off? Ninh Binh city, Tam Coc and Trang An are separate places. A cheap ticket can become an expensive, awkward last 10–15 km if the drop-off does not match your hotel.

Choose by final address first

Train: fixed route, extra last mile

Trains leave Hanoi Railway Station and arrive at Ninh Binh Station. The ride is roughly two to two and a half hours. This is the calmest choice for a fixed timetable and makes sense if you stay near the city station or continue by rail.

The station is in Ninh Binh city, not Tam Coc or Trang An. Budget for a taxi or local ride after arrival, and leave time if you are heading straight to a boat trip. Check the official Vietnam Railways schedule and fare for your date rather than relying on an old screenshot.

Limousine bus: often the practical middle ground

Limousine buses usually take around one and a half to two and a half hours, traffic depending. Some collect from a Hanoi hotel; others use a fixed meeting point. They can drop closer to Tam Coc or Trang An than the train, which is why they suit many first-time visitors.

Before paying, confirm the pickup point, luggage space, exact arrival address, whether hotel pickup is included and the return arrangement if this is a day trip. Compare the total trip, not only the ticket: a lower fare may exclude hotel pickup, the last transfer to Tam Coc or Trang An, luggage space, tolls or waiting time. Confirm those inclusions before paying.

Private car: pay for control

A private car costs more but takes you hotel to hotel in Hanoi, Tam Coc, Trang An, Ninh Binh city or farther toward Van Long. It suits families, groups, large bags and a same-day itinerary that needs a fixed return.

Ask for the total price, vehicle size, luggage allowance, tolls, waiting time and whether the driver returns to Hanoi. If you need a child seat, request one explicitly. Do not assume it comes with every vehicle.

Motorbike: flexibility with a higher workload

Allow roughly two and a half to three and a half hours with breaks and traffic. Ride only if you already have the required licence, helmet, insurance and experience in Vietnamese traffic. A suitcase, fresh arrival or tight boat schedule makes this a poor shortcut. Check the weather before leaving; wet roads and a rushed return are a bad combination.

Day trip or overnight?

A day trip is possible, but a private car gives the most useful sightseeing time. A well-timed limousine can work. The train is less forgiving because the station transfer takes part of the day. One night removes much of the pressure and lets you choose transport for comfort rather than squeezing every stop into a return timetable.
