Vietnam Domestic Flights: Baggage and Airport Check-in
Baggage and airport cutoffs vary by carrier and fare. Check these specifics before paying for a Vietnam domestic flight.
For a Vietnam domestic flight, check two separate things before you pay: what your exact fare includes in the cabin and what it allows you to check in. A brand name alone is not enough—allowances can change by fare family, and an online boarding pass does not check a suitcase for you.
The safest comparison is your selected flight and fare on the operating airline’s own booking page. The examples below show how the published rules differ; recheck the live terms attached to your ticket before departure.
Compare the fare, not just the airline
Vietjet
Vietjet’s baggage FAQ says its tickets do not include checked-baggage allowance. For cabin baggage, it allows one main piece and one small item with a combined maximum of 7 kg; the main piece must not exceed 56 × 36 × 23 cm. The total includes duty-free items. If you need a suitcase in the hold, add baggage to the booking and check that the purchase is attached to the correct passenger and flight.
Vietjet online check-in is available from 24 hours until 60 minutes before departure. Its domestic airport check-in counters close 40 minutes before departure. If you have checked baggage, online check-in does not remove the bag-drop step.

Bamboo Airways
Bamboo’s domestic fare table lists 7 kg of cabin baggage for Economy fares. Checked baggage depends on the fare family: some Economy options show checked baggage as chargeable, while others include 20 kg. Check the fare name and baggage line on the itinerary you are buying rather than assuming every Economy ticket comes with a suitcase.
Bamboo’s airport check-in information gives a two-hour opening window for domestic counters and a 40-minute counter closing time; its boarding gate closes 15 minutes before departure. Treat those as cutoffs, not as a recommendation to arrive at the last minute.
Vietnam Airlines
Vietnam Airlines’ checked-baggage page lists one checked piece of up to 23 kg for Economy on domestic routes. The airline also directs passengers to confirm baggage against their itinerary, and operating-carrier rules matter on codeshare flights. Check the allowance shown for your own booking, especially if the ticket combines carriers or fare conditions.
For domestic flights, airport counters open two hours before departure and close 40 minutes before. Online check-in is available from 24 hours to one hour before departure on eligible flights. If you have checked baggage, go to the baggage-drop or check-in counter after completing online check-in.

What to verify before you book
- Open the baggage section for the exact fare you selected. Check cabin baggage and checked baggage separately.
- Check both weight and dimensions for your carry-on. A bag that fits the scale can still exceed the airline’s size limit.
- If you are buying checked baggage, confirm it appears in the final itinerary or booking record for every relevant passenger and segment.
- For a codeshare or multi-airline itinerary, identify which carrier operates each flight and read that carrier’s conditions too.
- If you plan to check a bag, note the counter closing time and leave time for the airport journey, queue and security screening. The counter cutoff is not a safe arrival target.
- After online check-in, follow the airline’s instructions for bag drop. Keep the boarding pass and baggage receipt until you collect the bag.
Online check-in does not finish the airport process
The airlines’ online windows are similar in length, but the process after check-in depends on your baggage and flight. A traveler without checked luggage may be able to head to security once the airline confirms the mobile boarding pass is valid for that airport. A traveler with a suitcase still has to hand it over before the counter or bag-drop deadline. Special-service cases and operational changes can also require a counter visit.
Use the departure time printed on the current booking, not an old screenshot or a remembered schedule. Recheck the airline app or booking page before leaving for the airport; counter times, baggage rules and eligible online check-in airports can change.
A quick pre-payment check
- What is the exact fare family—not just the airline or cabin?
- How much cabin baggage is included, and what are its maximum dimensions?
- Is checked baggage included, chargeable, or absent from this fare?
- What time does the relevant counter close, and do you need bag drop after online check-in?
- Is another airline operating any segment? If so, have you checked its rules separately?
If you are still deciding whether a flight saves meaningful time on your route, compare it with rail, bus and private-car options in our Vietnam transport guide. The right choice depends on the whole journey, not only the time in the air.
