Ho Tram is that rare thing in Vietnam tourism: a genuinely nice beach destination that hasn’t been overrun yet. It’s closer to Saigon than Phu Quoc or Nha Trang, cleaner than Vung Tau, and the resort infrastructure is surprisingly good — you’ve got everything from five-star luxury to a world-class golf course and Southeast Asia’s biggest casino.
But it’s also a place most travel guides skip. No UNESCO sites. No Instagram-famous landmarks. Just a 30-kilometer stretch of coastline with good sand, calm water, and resorts that were built for people who want to relax, not tick off a checklist.
I’ve been sending guests here for years. Here’s everything you need to know — from getting there to where to stay to what’s actually worth doing.
Where Is Ho Tram — And What Is It, Exactly?
Ho Tram is a coastal area in Ba Ria–Vung Tau province, about 120km southeast of Ho Chi Minh City. It’s not a town in the traditional sense — more like a resort corridor, with properties spread along a 30km stretch of beach. The three main resort clusters are Melia Ho Tram (north end), The Grand Ho Tram Strip (central), and Angsana Ho Tram (south, near Ho Coc).
Think of it as Vietnam’s answer to a quiet beach getaway — not a party destination, not a backpacker hub. The crowd skews toward families, couples on short breaks, golfers, and (at The Grand) casino visitors. If you want nightlife, go to Nha Trang. If you want a beach with nobody on it and a cocktail by the pool, Ho Tram delivers.
How to Get There
Getting to Ho Tram used to be the main headache. It still requires planning, but it’s getting easier — and dramatically so in the next few years.
- Right now (2026): Private car from Tan Son Nhat Airport — 2 to 2.5 hours via the Long Thanh–Dau Giay Expressway. No direct public transport. Resort shuttles exist (Melia has one) but leave from HCMC pickup points, not the airport.
- From late 2026: Long Thanh International Airport opens — all international flights will eventually move here from Tan Son Nhat, cutting the drive significantly.
- By 2029: The new Ho Tram–Long Thanh Expressway cuts the trip to 45-60 minutes from the new airport. Game changer.
Bottom line: book a private transfer. Don’t try to Grab it — drivers won’t take a 2.5-hour one-way trip. We’ve written a full guide on options here.
Where to Stay
Three main options, very different vibes. We did a detailed comparison — here’s the quick version:
- Melia Ho Tram: 152 rooms + 88 private pool villas. Family favorite. Huge pool, solid kids’ club, good breakfast. Best option if you have kids.
- Angsana Ho Tram: Smaller, quieter, more boutique. Banyan Tree-level service. Best for couples. Skip if you have kids under 10. Best beach of the three.
- The Grand Ho Tram Strip: Complex with three hotels (InterContinental, Holiday Inn Resort, Ixora), casino, golf course, 10+ restaurants. Pick Holiday Inn if you’re a family, InterContinental for luxury. Big, busy, lots of options.
Things to Do
Most guests don’t leave the resort. That’s fine — the resorts are designed for that. But if you want to explore: here are 8 things actually worth doing — from Binh Chau Hot Springs to the local fishing port to The Bluffs golf course. Get a driver for half a day. The fishing port at 6am is worth the early wake-up.
Weather & Best Time to Visit
Southern Vietnam has two seasons: dry (November to April) and wet (May to October). Ho Tram is at its best from December to March — sunny, low humidity, calm seas. April and May are hot but still dry. June to October brings afternoon storms, but they’re usually short (1-2 hours) and the mornings are often clear.
One thing nobody mentions: the sea conditions change quite a bit by month. December–February the water is clearest. By August–September, it can get choppy — still swimmable but not that postcard-calm you see in resort photos. If you’re flexible on dates, aim for January or February.
Ho Tram with Kids
Ho Tram is one of the better family beach options near Saigon. The resorts are self-contained (no crossing busy roads to get to the beach), the water is generally calm, and Melia in particular caters well to families. Bring water shoes, mosquito repellent, and entertainment for the drive. No lifeguards on the beaches — this isn’t Australia — but the water is shallow and gentle most of the year.
What’s Coming — Why Ho Tram Is About to Change
Three big infrastructure projects are converging on Ho Tram in the next 3-5 years:
- Long Thanh Airport (Dec 2026): Vietnam’s new mega-airport, handling all international flights to southern Vietnam.
- Ho Tram–Long Thanh Expressway (2029): A $1.67 billion highway connecting the airport directly to Ho Tram’s resort corridor.
- The Grand Ho Tram’s $1 billion expansion: More hotels, more facilities, locals allowed in the casino under a new pilot program.
The net effect: Ho Tram in 2030 will be a very different place from Ho Tram in 2026. The uncrowded, slightly under-the-radar beach strip you can visit now? That window is closing. Go soon.
The Short Version
Ho Tram is the best beach escape within driving distance of Ho Chi Minh City — cleaner than Vung Tau, closer than Mui Ne, less developed than Phu Quoc. Book Melia if you have kids, Angsana if you’re a couple, The Grand if you want options (or a casino). Get a private transfer from the airport. And go in December through March if you can — the water in January is unbeatable.
