Restored Steam Locomotives Tested on Hue–Da Nang Railway

Two restored steam locomotives have undergone a Hai Van Pass trial. VNR’s final assessment is still pending; this is not a confirmed passenger launch.

Two restored steam locomotives from the 1960s have undergone technical testing on the railway between Hue and Da Nang through Hai Van Pass. Vietnam Railways Corporation (VNR) is assessing their condition and potential return to service, with the final decision still pending.

For travelers following plans for a steam-powered tourist train, that distinction matters: a test run is a development in the project, not confirmation that a new passenger service is ready to book.

What the trial was checking

The locomotives were tested with freight and passenger carriages. The work was intended to collect data on bridge and track load capacity, the condition of the engines and their ability to meet technical operating requirements.

VNR’s specialized departments prepared the testing plan. A representative of its Thua Thien Hue Railway Operations Branch described the run as a technical inspection for an operational assessment report, with official conclusions to follow evaluation by the professional council and VNR.

The two French-style Mikado locomotives are among Vietnam’s remaining operational steam engines. Their restoration preserves the older machinery while preparing it for assessment; it should not be read as a passenger-safety clearance or a guaranteed launch date.

The tourist-service plan remains a separate decision

Hue and VNR have been studying a steam-powered tourist service on the same route, including the possibility of a sightseeing stop around Hai Van Pass. Those plans remain distinct from the latest test and from the existing heritage-train service between the cities.

The October trial report does not establish a commercial steam-train timetable, ticket price or booking channel. Travelers should keep any confirmed rail arrangements separate from the proposal, rather than treating the tested locomotives as an available tourist departure.

For wider journey context, see our Vietnam transport overview. Local Hue arrangements can also be discussed with MIA Hue Tours; that is separate from approval of the proposed steam service.
